Factors Affecting the Selection of Techniques for Ground Improvement

The broadest meaning of ground improvement is the change in any property of a rock or soil for improving the engineering performance. This can be either permanent measure or a temporary one for making the improvement in the soil.

There are many techniques for improving ground and for enhancing the strength, reducing permeability, reducing compressibility or altering condition of ground water. In addition, if there is some problematic situation in the foundation of the pre-existing structures, then there can be use of a foundation treatment namely, in-place, for the rehabilitation of the structure. Different techniques involved for the attainment of the improvement facilities are referred as geotechnical processes.

CARE IMPROVEMENT

One can classify ground improvement techniques based on materials used, nature of involvement of process and the desired results. There are many techniques for improvement of ground such as compaction, vertical drains and precompression, drainage methods, vibration methods, injection and grouting, chemical stabilization and cementing geosynthetics and several other miscellaneous methods.

Following are the factors that you need to consider while selection of the best method or technique:

1. Type of soil: As the type of soil varies, the methods for improving it change. For instance, the best improvement technique for a clay soil may be different from that of organic soil.
2. Load distribution and structure type also affect the selection of the best technique.
3. Properties of the soil such as compressible, permeable, strength and many other similar properties affect the decision.
4. Availability of the equipments and skills play major role in the selection.
5. Economics play vital role in the selection too
6. Environmental conditions such as erosion, water pollution and waste disposal play their roles in large amount of the purpose.

Considering these factors can surely help in attaining the desirable technique for ground improvement.

Memory Improvement Techniques - Are You Taking Care of Your Brain?

Are you suffering from memory loss? Or would you just like to have that razor sharp memory from your youth? If so, the good news is that a good memory is well within your reach.

Let's start with arguably the most important factor in overall mental health, and that is taking good care of your brain. While it might sound simplistic, there are specific, proven techniques you can implement today that won't cost you a penny. Let's take a look at the specifics...

CARE IMPROVEMENT

First, it's important to realize your brain is just like any other body part, although much more powerful. Your brain needs nourishment. Just like any attribute of the human body, your brain needs to be taken care of and challenged to reach its peak potential. Think of it as a muscle. If you want a toned, trim body, exercise is crucial. If you want a high functioning memory, brain fitness is equally important.

An immediate solution for memory improvement is not often discussed, probably because it's not a miracle cure or filled with hype and glowing promises. But the truth is, one way to improve memory is to examine your personal habits and change them if necessary.

Examine Your Personal Habits

Are you getting enough sleep? Lack of sleep is a major cause of lowered brain function and hence, memory loss. We can't assign a specific number of hours you need to sleep - only you can determine how much you need.

But it's well worth taking a good hard look at your sleep habits. Are you sleeping a consistent amount of hours? Do you have good sleep habits, like a comfortable bed and retiring at roughly the same time? Be honest with yourself to determine if changes are required..

Further, just as good nutrition plays a key role in physical health, the same is true for brain function and memory. You can improve brain fitness by making sure you're eating a balanced diet. Are you getting all the nutrients you need? What about water consumption, are you drinking enough water? All of the good physical health habits apply to brain health as well.

What Else Can I Do?

We're not big on taking pills, so we're not going to suggest you run out and buy the latest herbal supplement. But a good multi vitamin is useful, especially as we age. They're inexpensive and if you take one consistently, you'll notice a positive difference. You'll have increased energy levels, higher brain capacity, and you'll feel better physically.

Finally, another good way to improve memory is to challenge your brain. Sorry, but watching this seasons newest sitcom doesn't make the grade. With a few notable exceptions, watching Tv is passive and doesn't challenge your brain.

Make your brain work instead of kicking it into passive gear. Here's something to try. Instead of relying on your car's GPS, make a point to study the route beforehand and challenge yourself to remember it. You can always write down the directions just in case.

In today's gadget driven and high tech society, we often over rely on technology instead of using good old fashioned brain power. The end result is less stimulation to the brain, which results in lowered capacity and a decrease in memory skills. The less we're forced to use the brain and our capacity for memory, the less likely it'll be there when we need it.

Think of your brain as being just like your heart. Take care of it, use it, and give it a workout. You might even get praised for having a razor sharp memory!

Memory Improvement Techniques

The first memory improvement techniques to examine is brain fitness.

Doesn't it make sense that memory improvement techniques would work best in a brain that is fit?

CARE IMPROVEMENT

Perhaps you did not know that there were some things you could do to make more neurons (neurogenesis) and increase the connectivity of neurons, which the scientists call neuroplasticity.

You are not alone in that 'never-heard-of-neurogenesis' category, because the discovery of this particular capacity of the human brain happened within the last 15 years.

But it is true, we grow new neurons every day, and if they do not sprout up in a brain that has too much or too frequent stress hormone presence or too much or too frequent exposure to booze or environmental toxins, for example, those new neurons will migrate to the hippocampus, which is an important part of the memory system.

So let's start with brain fitness as our basic memory improvement technique.

If you want an a basic primer on brain fitness, I suggest you read Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.

Evans and Burghardt have culled the neuroscientific research and put the nuggets they have found for us into a enjoyable jargon free book.

They say that brain fitness means taking care of the pillars of brain fitness, which are physical exercise, nutrition including lots of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acid, stress management, lots of good sleep, and novel learning experiences, which usually means exposing yourself to the challenges of learning a new language or a new instrument, or perhaps using one of the new computerized brain fitness programs.

Working Out is A Memory Improvement Technique?

Yes, perhaps the most important memory improvement techniques tool.

If you think that means going to the gym and flinging around heavy barbells, you can relax. The kind of exercise that is required for brain fitness is about ten minutes per day of something that will make you breathe deep, so if you are walking around the block, go a little faster for a little longer. But this is a minimum requirement, folks, and more is better here, so swimming, and biking, and aerobic workouts are very important for neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, and a fitter brain forms more connections which is what memory really is, connections between neurons.

Can't I Just Find a Memory Pill to Eat?

Well, vitamins and omega 3 fatty acid can be taken in pill form, but it is best to get them from your diet, and a couple of squares of dark chocolate will help here too.

For brain fitness though, you must put an end to processed foods and high fructose corn syrup, and include much more fresh fruit and vegetables.

What has sleep Got to Do With Memory Improvement Techniques?

It turns out that your brain uses the time you are asleep to complete certain hormonal events and to consolidate memories. You risk faulty memory by cutting short your sleep, and stress hormones present too often kill those new neurons, so stress management of the heart rate variability kind, or deep breathing exercises are absolutely vital to neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

I Do Not Have Time For Learning a New Language!

So you want novel learning experiences, but you do not have time to take up a new instrument or a new language.

There are some great new computerized brain fitness programs with excellent research which actually exercise the neurons in the memory circuits if you will, that can be worked into your daily schedule to enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

One of them, based on the dual n back task, actually has been shown to increase IQ, and another, was the subject of extensive research in the 2009 IMPACT study.

If you are going to use computerized brain fitness techniques as part of your memory improvement techniques routine, make sure to double check the research the program has behind it, and make sure that there are scientists on the advisory board.

Once you have a solid brain fitness routine down, increased neurogenesis and neuroplasticity are natural consequences, which beef up your hippocampus and make your memories rock solid. Or a least you will know where your car keys are.

How to Make the Grass Greener on YOUR Side of the Fence

As summer draws near it is the perfect time to devise a care program that will allow your lawn to become as green and healthy as possible. The green-ness of the grass is a result of how much nutrients it receives via the soil. You too can have greener looking grass by improving your soil, maintaining adequate levels of moisture, aerating the ground and regular mowing.

CARE IMPROVEMENT

Out of the many elements that can affect the color of your lawn, pay attention to the sun exposure it receives. Trees and man-made structures can cast shadows that prevent the sunlight from doing its thing, resulting in a muted shade of green. If possible consider removing the offending branches to remedy the situation.

Foot traffic can also have a devastating effect on your lawn: the soil is compacted which prevents water and oxygen from reaching the roots as they should. Aeration can usually help in this situation: the best time for this spring, and possibly in the fall as well if required. You should avoid aerating at the height of the summer as it could prove too stressful for your lawn, given the heat.

You can achieve a greener result by knowing how much you should water and when. The best time to pick is early morning as the water can reach the roots before it has a chance to evaporate. Regularity and frequency will also help by not leaving dry patches, allowing the lawn to become to dry between watering days, or too soaked. You should consider installing a watering system to help you irrigate your lawn easily and properly, to maintain the best possible shade of green.

The overall color will also be affected by rubble and thatch. You can take care of this with regular raking to ensure any dried blades over half an inch long get removed promptly. This will let water, oxygen and nutrients reach the roots more easily, helping with keeping your lawn green and in top condition.

Another factor that can have an effect on the color of your lawn is the condition of your soil: the correct pH level and texture will go a long way in keeping the grass healthy. You can help out by feeding a fertilizer: the exact type depends on the type of soil, the type of problem and time of year.

It is essential to adopt a suitable mowing routine to keep your lawn in top condition. When to mow and how much you cut have and effect: if you cut too much the lawn can become stressed, and insufficient mowing will prevent the correct amount of water and sunlight from reaching the blades.

Good aeration, soil improvement as needed and regular mowing and watering routine will help your grass become healthier and stay greener. The key to a green lawn is simple maintenance!
