Nature of the Nursing Tasks

Registered nurses work to help patients deal with illness, promote health and prevent disease. They are health educators and advocates for communities, families and patients. When rendering direct patient care they examine, access and record the reactions, symptoms and progress. They help physicians during examinations and treatments, handle medications and aid in rehabilitation and convalescence. RNs also administer nursing care plans, guide patients and their families in right care and help groups and individuals to take steps to maintain or improve their health.

Hospital nurses: They are the major group of nurses. Majority are staff nurses who perform medical regiments and offer bedside nursing care. They may also administer licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants. Hospital nurses generally are allocated to one area like maternity, emergency room, surgery, pediatrics, treatment of cancer patients or intensive care.

Office nurses: They take care for outpatients in clinics, emergency medical centers and physicians' offices. They prepare patients and aid them with examinations, dress wounds, administer medications and injections, maintain records and assist with minor surgery. Some may carry out routine office and laboratory work.

Home health nurses: They render periodic services to the patients at home. They take care for a wider range of patients like those recovering from childbirth and cancer, accidents and illness. After considering patient's home environment, they instruct and care for patients and their families.

Public health nurses: They usually work in private and government agencies, retirement communities, schools, clinics and other community settings. They work for the improvement of the overall health of the communities. As partners they work with communities to implement and plan programs. Public health nurses instruct people regarding disease prevention, health issues, childcare and nutrition. They make arrangements for blood pressure testing, immunizations and other health screening. They also work with teachers, community leaders, physicians and parents in community health education.

Industrial nurses: They offer nursing care at worksites to customers, employees and others with illness and slight injuries. They render emergency care and prepare accident reports if necessary. They also assist with health examinations, offer health counseling and access work environments to spot safety problems.

Head nurses: They are nurse supervisors who direct nursing activities. They prepare work schedules and allocate duties to nurses and assistants, provide for training and visit patients to make sure the proper delivery of care.
