CARE IMPROVEMENT

Don't mow grass too short. 3 to 4 is an acceptable length for grass. Longer blades, especially for newly planted sods will lead to stronger roots. It also promotes better absorption of water and plant food. Set your sprinklers early in the morning. Water your lawn right before the sun comes up. For warm areas like Florida, watering sods in the morning is the best way to go because it gives grass enough time to absorb water in preparation for the dry weather. A period of "rest" is good. When the say rest, they mean you leave your lawn untouched for a month. This is most applicable to warmer areas such as New Port Richey and the rest of Florida. The aim is to help your lawn develop its own method of recovery during drought. Come fall, then you may get back to mowing, fertilizing, and regularly watering your sods. Schedule fertilizer application. Do not fertilize in the summer. September or the fall season is the most ideal period for grass fertilizing. Grass are more adapted to feeding on nutrients during this time of the year because they are preparing for the cold season.

FERTILIZING DOS AND DON'TS

For new sods- use starter fertilizers. This plant food is rich in potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorous. Professional lawn care providers will conduct soil tests and analysis to make sure that the fertilizer being applied is compatible with the current state of your soil. Weed killers should not be applied to new grass sods. Anti-weed compounds can actually kill young lawns.

For Fescues, Bluegrasses and Ryegrasses- these are cool climate lawns and their full lushness can only be seen in colder regions. Feed your lawn early in the fall, once or twice. Anything more could be excessive. Applying fertilizers once during mid spring can also help your lawn grow thicker.

For Bermuda and Zoysia- since these grasses dwell in warm climates, fertilizing the early summer to late spring should help them maintain their health. Note that application of plant food should be done lightly to avoid scorching the roots. Overfeeding your grass can lead to dark-colored grass that are just plain unsightly. Fertilizing this variety of grass in the later part of fall will be fatal so avoid this time.
