Home Care Series: Home Care for Dementia

Home care is especially required for people who have dementia, and need constant help to even remember themselves. Caregivers need to be extra careful while taking care of special diseases, such as dementia. One way to help these people out is to make sure they are surrounded by familiar objects and the lights of the place are always kept on, even at night - so that it becomes easier for them to remember things from the past every time they forget. The patients of dementia need to be given constant reminders about everything, so that they cannot forget things so easily.

Home care would mean making sure these patients do not think that they are away from their own places. The patients grow a sense of dependency on their caregivers. That makes it easier to control them during the times they have fits. It is important to remain calm and to soothe the patients with dementia when they forget what is wrong with them. Caregivers need to always be alert to the changes in their conditions, and respond to their changes. Sometimes the violent fits of the patients need to be calmed down, with the help of sedatives, and medications. Therefore, trained nurses or nursing assistants ought to be hired for dementia patients.

CARE IMPROVEMENT

Normal caregivers would not be cut out for this job, as merely the goodwill of the caregiver would not help in the looking after these patients. They need more than a helping hand and someone who can give them medicines on time. They need someone who can rise to the occasion in case they ever go into frenzy and calm them down with words, medication or otherwise. Skilled caregivers are required for people like this, and so that others responsible for them can be at peace knowing they're safe.
