Leather Sofa, Couch Care

Leather is a natural product with its own unique characteristics, style, comfort and durability. The leather industry is one of the oldest known to man and its methods have changed little over the years. Upholstering leather furniture is still work of craftsmen.

When purchasing a traditional hand made English leather sofa care should be taken to treat the leather and look after the furniture in the correct way.

CARE IMPROVEMENT

As with all leather furniture, leather sofas are hard wearing and if manufactured in the traditional way are very robust.

The main area for concern is the cleaning and treatment of the leather. Leather should be cleaned with no more than mild detergent i.e. fairy liquid. Not at any point should bleaches or man made solvent cleaners be used as this can attack and damage the leather. Clean gently using circular motions in order to lift the dirt from the grain of the leather. Once dried naturally the leather sofa can then be treated with a specialist hide food which can be bought from all reputable furniture stores.

Once this is applied it will help prolong the life of the leather by keeping it supple. Many modern hide foods contain leather fragrance agents.

If your hand made leather sofa has been manufactured in any of the superior aniline leathers, different cleaning methods are required which your retailer will be able to advise you of as there are many different styles and finishes. Some absorb and stain very easily with moisture so great care must be taken to only use recommend products.
